Data handling and security
The privacy policy covers the website. Smith.ai's Terms (July 2026) say call data is confidential, shared with staff who need it under NDA, jointly owned, and deleted on request within 30 days, which may close the account; they claim DPF certification. No SOC 2, ISO 27001 or HIPAA statement.Read October 25, 2026: privacy policy. Sources 9, 10, 11

What it does

Smith.ai says its AI Receptionist answers your calls around the clock, screens new callers against criteria you set and sends each call's summary and contact details to your CRM.

Its lead screening page says it also collects intake details such as case numbers or property addresses during the call. The product page adds that it flags high-priority prospects.

A caller can be warm-transferred to a team member with the call's context, the same page says.

Smith.ai's October 14, 2026 product update says the AI Receptionist now books appointments in Lawmatics during the call and logs the call there afterwards, and the caller gets a confirmation email and a follow-up text.

An escalation to a live receptionist carries no fee when the AI starts it, the product page's FAQ says, while live-agent help you choose to add for verification or scheduling is a per-call add-on. Smith.ai's free plan post, though, calls human escalation an opt-in add-on at one flat rate.

The product page lists English and Spanish. Its FAQ answers yes to whether callers will know it's AI, saying businesses can set the greeting to introduce it.

Who it fits

Smith.ai's AI Receptionist suits small and mid-sized businesses that win new customers by phone, and its product page speaks mostly to law firms screening callers by matter type and booking consultations.

The vendor's industry menu also lists home services, insurance, finance and others. On Clutch, Smith.ai's profile lists its clients as 70% small businesses, under $10M in revenue, and 30% midmarket.

Smith.ai's AI Receptionist pricing page says cancelling takes 30 days' notice, and a 6-month plan with rollover calls goes through sales.

Every plan, the free one included, gets all the features, Smith.ai says. The pricing page puts dedicated onboarding and live support on Pro, and says that on Enterprise, Smith.ai's own team builds and runs a custom setup.

I'd look at it for inbound lead qualification if most of your new business rings in and you can write down what makes a caller worth a same-day callback. No page I read names a customer above 250 people, so I haven't listed that size.

Limitations

Smith.ai documents its AI Receptionist as a phone product, and I found no page that lists web forms or email as a lead source. Its Terms list "AI-led receptionist telephone answering" first among the AI Receptionist's services, and web chat is a separate Smith.ai product with its own pricing.

None of the AI Receptionist pages I read mentions enriching a lead with company data, and none gives a lead a numeric score beyond the high-priority flag. The help center's call dashboard tags calls Low, Normal or Urgent, but that article sits under Virtual Receptionists and doesn't name the AI product.

If your leads come through forms and you want each one enriched and scored, I'd start with a custom inbound triage workflow instead.

Every call the AI answers counts toward your quota by default, Smith.ai's pricing FAQ says, with an allowance to remove up to 10% of a cycle's calls as spam. On Pro, calls over the 75 cost $2.50 each against $2.00 inside the plan, listed in October 2026. The free plan also needs a card at signup, though Smith.ai says overages stay off until you turn them on.

Security documentation is thin, and the footer's Security link opens a vulnerability disclosure page.

If you're in a regulated field, budget for your own security and compliance review before callers' details go through it.
