Data handling and security
Agiloft's security page (SOC 1, SOC 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certification) and its DPA (at least 256-bit encryption at rest) speak for the company and don't name Astra. Astra's help states TLS 1.2 and no AI training on customer data; Agiloft's subprocessor list names AWS and OpenAI for Astra.Read October 25, 2026: privacy policy, security page. What it does

Agiloft Astra checks contracts against pass/fail playbooks, which it calls Screens, and suggests redlines in Microsoft Word or in its web app, according to Agiloft's help centre.

The product was called Screens until April 2026, Agiloft's release notes say.

Per Agiloft's help centre, you upload a file, paste the text or share a public URL, and Astra fills in core fields such as the effective date and the total value.

A Screen is a set of standards and questions. Each standard is a rule written as a prompt (the docs' example is a confidentiality period of no more than 3 years), and it can carry up to three fallback positions. Run the Screen and, per the docs, the results sit beside the document.

Agiloft says the Word add-in drafts redlines toward your preferred position or toward a weaker fallback the reviewer picks, and a failed standard can add your comment for the counterparty into the document.

The Community Screens library holds ready-made Screens, and Agiloft says its experts test each one on a set of contracts before it's published.

Agiloft says a Screen can also run over many documents at once, and that its Astra Assistant answers plain-language questions across your contracts.

Who it fits

Astra fits a team that reviews the same few contract types often, works in Microsoft Word and has someone who can write the rules. The product page FAQ says it's built for any team that works with contracts, naming legal, procurement, finance and sales.

A small business would start on the free plan. Agiloft's product page caps it at three custom playbooks, and its FAQ says review in the Word add-in uses no credits.

Outside Word, uploading a document costs 5 credits and running a Screen about 1 credit per standard per document, the help centre says. By my arithmetic, uploading a contract and running a 20-standard Screen on it costs about 25 credits, so 1,000 credits cover roughly 40 contracts a month.

Pro lifts the cap on custom playbooks. The help centre sends upgrades through "your Agiloft representative", so I'd plan on a conversation with sales even for the 2,500-credit Pro tier.

Advanced adds SSO and dedicated onboarding, per the product page. Agiloft says its CLM customers get Astra through the "AI on the Inside" package, with Screen results written back to the CLM. NetApp and The Imagine Group, two customers Agiloft quotes for Astra, both have in-house legal staff; I didn't find a small business among the customers it quotes.

It suits a business without a lawyer less well. Agiloft's Services Agreement, which doesn't name Astra, says Agiloft isn't a law firm and leaves the customer responsible for judging whether outputs are accurate.

Astra's docs don't describe an API. If findings have to land in another system, that's a case where a custom AI agent beats an off-the-shelf tool.

Limitations

Astra accepts only .pdf, .docx and .txt files, and by default documents up to 500 pages, according to Agiloft's troubleshooting guide.

The same guide says the Word add-in has performance issues at 100 or more standards in a Screen, where one-click redlines fail more often and Word can crash.

Agiloft's docs describe clause examples in each Screen result and click-through to recurring clauses, but no page number or citation field for each finding. If page-level citations matter to your reviewers, compare the other contract review agents on that point.

None of the Astra help pages I read mention scanned PDFs or OCR.

Each Screen at NetApp is designed for one agreement type, so attorneys there "cannot use Astra when a relevant screen has not yet been built", according to Agiloft's case study, which names building Screens fast enough as the harder task.

Unused credits don't carry over to the next month, per the help centre.

Two Agiloft documents give different regions for Astra's data. The help centre lists data residency in the US, EU, Canada and Australia, while the subprocessor list gives Astra's AWS hosting as Germany and the US. Ask which applies before you upload contracts that must stay in one region.

The September and October 2026 release notes list fixes for occasional failures to redline whole clauses, Word highlights that didn't always match the redline, credits charged on the wrong document count, and a permissions bug that let some users see documents they hadn't created.

No independent review of Astra's output was readable in October 2026. G2, Capterra and four other review sites refused automated requests. I'd try the free plan on your own contracts first, and pin the success numbers before you sign for anything paid.
